National Educational Technology Standards for Students Single (1 Book)
[ss142628]

The second publication in the NETS Project, National Educational Technology Standards for Students: Connecting Curriculum and Technology, takes a critical step toward empowering todayÕs KÐ12 students for a complex and demanding future. Three dozen teacher-created lesson plans, sequenced by grade level, illustrate the connection between teaching specific disciplines—English language arts, foreign language, mathematics, science, and social studies—and NETS for Students performance indicators. Each lesson sequence addresses national standards for the discipline, suggests related resources, and provides a brief narrative by a teacher who has actually used the lesson in a classroom.

The second part of this versatile and comprehensive resource embraces eight powerful themes through multidisciplinary learning activities. Direct links are made between content standards from two or more subject areas and the NETS for Students performance indicators. Units for each grade range provide developmentally appropriate themes, tools, and resources from which teachers can choose when developing specific learning experiences for their classrooms. Also includes the full text of the National Educational Technology Standards for Students.

This book provides an overview of technology's place in curriculum, sample lessons, educational technology standards, and performance indicators with examples and scenarios for different grade levels. Combining the ideal with the practical, this book also provides insight into avenues that might lead to the realization of the standards.

The third section is the meatiest and by far the strongest of the book. It features lessons consisting of several activities and student projects for assessment. One lesson in particular, "Discovering Ourselves in Literature and Life," was a real standout. Created for language arts secondary students, this lesson has the potential to be used throughout a student's high school career. The project could be developed to cover the course of those discovery years and trace a young person's exploration of literature and self-reflection. In total, there are eight lessons for language arts, four for foreign language, eight for mathematics, eight for science, and eight for social studies.

Section four includes eight additional multidisciplinary lessons, many of which include at least 10 activities. The appendix includes the technology standards as they apply to each discipline, templates for designing your own lessons, workshop guides for staff development, resources, and a glossary. The appendix is as useful as the body of the book.

One of the practical strengths of this book is that it is spiral bound, making it easy to copy the pages. The technology referenced and suggested for use with the activities includes much more than computers and Internet. Students will use video and digital cameras, radios, telephones, audiotape players, and much more. This broad range of technology expands our view of the standards and their application in education.

Although this book has something to offer all teachers, secondary educators will probably tend to use only the sections written for their discipline. This is not a weakness of the book, just the nature of the high school beast. However, it would definitely be to teacher's advantage to delve into the other discipline areas. Much is to be gained by reading the entire book and adapting some of the ideas presented outside of a given teaching area. I would recommend this book as a resource for all teachers and instructional leaders as well as preservice teachers and their instructors.
